Gear linkage grease nipple
Hi, what size is the grease nipple on the rear of a remote control type gearbox? ( the nipple the lubricates the rod up through the diff.housing) Mine looks to be a taper thread( stripped!)
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
From my experience of threading the inner end of the rear radius arm shaft, both are identical grease nipples and threaded 1/4UNF - tapered for some reason!. That said, if your female thread is stripped then there are several other oversize threads and nipples (metric ?) that you could use.

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
I have one hear that appears untampered and the thread looks like 5/16 BSF ( 22 tpi ) which is surprising ?

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
I am pretty positive that whatever they are, they're BSF and visually tapered with a UHN 4xx part number. 400 indicating a linear lubricator, 445 indicating a 45 degree angled lubricator. And then there's a 90 degree angled lubricator that I can't see in the parts list......, but one such little bugger is fitted in place at the rear of the gearbox and totally inaccessible except with an 18" grease gun extension from above - wot I ain't got!
Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
I can get onto the gear linkage grease nipple without difficulty with this grease gun (twin hs4's and large bore long 3 into 1 exhaust manifold). Probably wouldn't if it was lever operated though.

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
Since you have raised the point David, can is ask that you tell us how you solved it eventually. Can I also ask/suggest that you direct the nipple - pesumably it'll be a 45 degree angled nipple - where it's accessible from below and show us all so that, in my case, it's not trial and error in the future. Thanks. I can see that others like me will be taking note and acting on your info

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
Timmy!
That's also what i think about.
I worked on a carrots harvester wich had all grease points assembled at one simple piont. That way it was easy to get all nipples greased.
But to be honest, till now i didn't had any problems getting the gearnipple greased...

I promise i won't buy another MkI...

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
I have removed mine in order to find a replacement.
Measured the thread at 5/16" X 24 threads and thought to be straight thread. You may be right that the threads might 5/16" x 22 BSF.
The nipple seems to have a 65 degree angle to it. The spring inside and behind the tiny ball has failed.
This nipple is not easily found here in the USA.
Somerford Mini has a straight nipple with no angle. May be difficult to put the grease gun coupler on it.
I have a pistol grip grease gun with an 18" flex hose.

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
This angle of grease nipple and it's orientation allows access to mine in situ with no dismantling using the above grease gun.

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
Got M8 nipple and tried it in but not enough thread near outside to grip (with fibre washer fitted). Turned hex and thread off original nipple, got 5/16 UNF bolt and chopped to slightly longer than original nipple, bored through bolt long-ways with small drill, counterbored head of bolt so that original nipple 'stub' fitted in then silver soldered original nipple into bolt head. Now sits as original with 45 degree nipple facing upwards. Bit of a faff!

Re: Gear linkage grease nipple
My nipple points upwards, just like Imacs and using a bit of welding wire, I recon that it's about 18" DOWN from between the carbs to the nipple. Your grease gun tube might be a bit short when the engine is installed. I'm just about to make an extension lead so to speak, so that I can click it onto the nipple then click the grease gun onto the extension lead. What a xxxxxxg job....... Maybe I ought to just look through ebay for a ready made one.
