I have just refurbished the wipers on my Mk1. New wheel boxes, new gear cable and new gear cable Bundy tubing. Not an easy job because the Bundy tubing you get from Minispares is not quite bent to the correct angle. Anyway with a lot of manipulating, I managed to connect it to the motor by removing the motor completely. I then struggled to get the three motor studs back into their holes in the firewall. But it's done and despite everything seeming really stiff, the wipers work really well. The old ones were caked in dry grease (I guess I could have cleaned the old ones up and reused them but decided not to.) Anyway the point of all this is to ask a question.
The Mk1 motor has two electrical connections, presumably live and earth. It then has a wire than connects from the motor to the gear cover. Attached to the inside the cover is a brass C shaped section which is swept by a brass arm connected to the gear wheel. Now, we all know that Mk1 wipers don't self park, but looking at this, it seems it was designed to do it. The motor still works with that cover off. Any thoughts?

Re: Wiper motor Refurb and Question
It's dated April 1966 which my car is.
If indeed it is a self park, how do you make it work?

Re: Wiper motor Refurb and Question
You need to power up the park (connection slider) part, google the wiring diagram for the wiper motor with the correct number of speeds (in you case 1 I think) with a park facility.
It is not difficult to get it to work as long as you find the correct connector plugs. I purchased the correct connectors with the correct loom wire attached, then just spliced the lot in!

Re: Wiper motor Refurb and Question
Thanks Bitsilly. As I understand it, some Mk1 Cooper Ss were fitted with the self-park motor which was used on other BMC cars, but the Cooper S did not have the wiring for it to work. I will investigate.

Re: Wiper motor Refurb and Question
Additionally, I'd get a wiring diagram from any other BMC car factory fitted from new with a self parking WW motor. It will all be there. Another thing while we're here, are you sure that your motor is compatible with the screen sweep required for a mini.
Does it require a different switch that enables the live + to continue when the switch is flicked OFF?
I'm fairly sure that this Q cropped up on this very forum some months ago. Have a look in the search facility - just up there......, that's it...., on the right!

Re: Wiper motor Refurb and Question
The sweep angle can be changed through the arm being attached to the wheel at varying distances from its centre.
Car Builder Solutions and others used to offer plenty of points at different length from the centre of the wheel, and hence sweep of blade options.
However, I would presume that the position of all Mini wiper points are the same and also need the same wheel in the motor.
Good point on the switch needed, I'd forgotten that!
