Engine paint colours

Post by Pete »

Did the big tuners in the 60s and 70s use a specific paint colour for their engines? I can think of a couple but who used light blue? I’ve got a Downton 1275 S engine from 1965 and it’s this colour and i’m sure I’ve seen it before

My original Oselli was tuned in 69 according to its previous owner..and although it is a little greasy round the edges does still have most of its original light blue engine paint.

Hope this helps.

Downton Engines were all originally Mid Bronze Green. Repainted with paint collected direct from Abingdon.

I have seen that light (ish) blue Hammerite used on many engines over the years, but don't know that it was used by a specific tuner. If it was, the most likely by far would be Alexander, they had Blue throughout their brochures & packaging throughout most of the 1960's.

That blue was however the "original" colour of Hammered paint. Before Hammerite as we know it today came along.
