Master Cylinders
The master cylinders on my car are both the same. Obvious replacements at some point. What I don't know is if I have 2 brake or 2 clutch masters.
They are both 2 5/8" in diameter and 2 1/4" tall with 0.75" bores. Off the car and disassembled the "clutch" master does not have a check valve.
I'm told that height is the only external difference.
Can anyone help?
thanks,
Brian

Re: Master Cylinders
Hi brian - can you post a pic as one aligns with the foot when you line up the pipe tower and lid, whilst the other is set angle is across the line. I’m on my phone so no pics sorry - but that’s a clear external difference.

An S master is taller, standard bean cans are the same height.
I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

Re: Master Cylinders
The foot of the two cylinders is quite different and an easy way to tell which is which. The brake cylinder has a much larger foot, shown on left in picture below.

Re: Master Cylinders
Just post a picture of the masters on your car - it will be fairly obvious what you have.
If installed correctly, with the fillers at the back, on a brake master the outlet pipe should be to the right of the filler, on a clutch the outlet should be to the left (as you look at the cylinders stood in front of the car)
This is correct:

Re: Master Cylinders
Thanks to all who responded. I can clearly see they can't be interchangeable. The difference in orientation of caps and outlets escaped me on first look. Mine were installed on the car same as the picture supplied by GraemeC.

Re: Master Cylinders
I think the foot may be a development thing. I have both clutch and brake ones here with big feet. I think they came in later as replacements?
