Rust removal/protection

Post by rolesyboy »

I had my entire shell painted 6-7 years ago and it has started to show early signs of surface rust on parts of the shell that on closer inspection have not been prepped or keyed up correctly. It tends to be areas that the painter has missed ie top of the front panel/front wing seam ie the shelf/mud trap on the inside, the inside of the lower front valance which has not been keyed up and so the paint has flaked/split allowing moisture to sit behind it.
What is the best way of stripping these areas, what rust treatment should I add etc. I am happy to get the top coat painted at a body shop in 2 pack but can't justify spending the money on prep by a shop. Any advice appreciated.
Just a thought- what do forum members think to having a step by step guide on the forum to this kind of process eg paint prep, rust removal from some of the more experienced restorers on here?? Other examples could be fitting door chrome, stripping a gearbox, hanging MK 1 doors, panelling a front end etc. All really useful stuff esp with photos.

Cheers. Mark
