Van quarter panel bodge woes

Foolishly I thought the van bodywork was coming to an end...
However what I thought would be a gutter repair, and possibly a new skin has turned out to be more sinister.
The door fit on the drivers side has always been naff. And now I think I know why.
Hopefully the photos make sense. I am unsure how to remedy this repair, with out it becoming a 'modern' bodge. So as always, advice from you guys would be greatly received.
(I have tried making the photos smaller, if they are too large let me know and I shall adjust).
Here you can see the the passenger side drip rail... as the factory intended, spot welded underneath the gutter (which I assume is apart of the quarter/ side panel). As per the factory.
Now this is the drivers side, where the side panel goes over the top of the drip rail...
But only up until this point, where it looks like the door frame has been cut and welded to the new side. However where they have left the drip rail the door frame is too low at the back.
SO, from that seam weld back, the quarter panel/ side panel seams to have had the roof gutter removed and putted up against the old gutter) causing a sandwich of rust. Meaning its all pretty knackered.
How is this best to fix this mess? Ideally I would like to find a NOS side panel (seen them in the past before I owned a van) but that is like looking for hens teeth in a pile of rocking horse poo.
Thanks in advance,
Oli
