Pistons identity

Post by Tedwong »

Hi can anyone identify this piston and most importantly can I buy rings for them? It was removed from my Mk3 Cooper S engine! Not original pistons I guess ;)
Thank you very much!

Check the Ring widths, I'm sure those are 1/16" and 5/32" on the Oil Control.

If they are, then Grants P1280 are the ones.

I think these pistons were used in some Metros (MGs maybe?) but whether they were used in early engines I don't know.

as Graeme pointed, i have an early 1275 S Metro engine ( non MG with small valve "flat thermostat" head from factory ) and it uses these pistons, i believe they are 9.75:1 compression .

Doing a bit of Googling, it looks like the same base casting was used for different applications with different dished and heights.
Looks like they were also used in some Metro turbo engines with a larger dish.

If they are AE / Hepolite / Leyland / Rover pistons they will have a 5 diget part nimber stamped on top of pistons or cast inside skirt

It’s stamped in the skirt, just a little hard to read the numbers:
Hepolite
20852A or 20352A

Hi Guys, thanks for the reply!
The inner skirt was stamped Hepolite 20832A, no standard or overbore figure.
After googling, only small amount of information saying MG Metro non-turbo applications.
Btw, what pistons were used on standard MK3 Cooper S engine?

What is 1275 S Metro engine?
early metros had a less powerful A+ 1275 version ( here branded S / HLS ) , it had small valves "flat thermostat" head , tamer camshaft than the MG Metro, single piece cast inlet/exhaust manifold like the 1.0 metro, HIF44 , points distributor , and mine had verto flywheel and intertia starter from factory. It used these same pistons you've listed here.

Cheers
Luis

Just checked my Metro 1275 pistons and they have following cast numbers: Hepolite 20832A / 413P G4
Yes I am a nerd: I am researching the Austrian Mini-racing scene of the 60s and 70s :ugeek:
