Cooper mk1 speedo repair experts!

Post by Charlynsane »

Hello Guys

I have some troubles with my 160 kph speedo

it indicates well the speed but the KM counter doesn't work anymore stuck at 31900 km

Does anyone ever experienced that?

The cable is brand new but may be faulty? or it's a problem with the internal components?

If it indicates speed the cable cannot be at fault, the fault must be internal. We had a Smiths MGA speedo rebuilt to like new by Speedograph ltd in the UK. They did a stunning job and now it reads accurate (had to have it recalibrated because we changed the FD in the diff to lower the revs at motorway speeds).
Of course I know what a dipstick is, you get called something often enough you look it up!

Almost certainly it will be wear in the little arm that pushes the drum around.

Not difficult to correct once apart. I've never bought a new arm, just been lucky and took one from another speedo.

Mine had a dodgy pin on the “tenths” wheel and wouldn’t push the next wheel around on time. The repair shop replaced the wheel and now it’s all good

He said the speedo is maybe stuck? I will disassemble it and try to find the faulty spare,
