Shorrock Tech - advise needed

Post by Dr S »

I’ve got a shorrock on the bench gradually moving towards the car... it spins really nicely and smoothly and you can hear it ‘pump’.
But is it prudent to strip and rebuild before fitting? Has anyone stripped one? Easy to inspect? I’m guessing looking for wobbly bearings and smooth surfaces for the vanes to run against.
FWIW the charger was a spare for a racing speedway bike so I suspect it’s ok - why have a knackered spare. But that was the eBay story not known fact :-)
I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

Hi,
I am in a similar position, so will follow this topic with interest...

There are a number of useful articles online, and one on this very site
http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.u ... _ins-2.pdf
It shows that a few specific tools, mandrels etc, are needed - but nothing too complicated.

If this isn't your thing, then there are a number of people in the UK willing to rebuild/service these, although not cheap!
I can't remember their names off the top of my head, i'm sure someone else will, as I think there are few members running shorrocks on this site.

Cheers, Rich

I did the blower on the OAP 850, it was Perry Shaw's car.

DON'T strip them down just for the fun of it. They are VERY FINELY Balanced & stripping can if not done correctly render them totally useless.

The stripping info on the main MK1 site is all correct, but it is the balancing that is the issue.

Personally speaking (& I did a good few of these a few years ago) I would give it a close inspection, It's OK to take the pulley end of the drum off to check for scoring or scratchy bearings, BUT DON'T remove the end of the drum!!!!! If all looks / sounds OK, then give it a whirl.

If the blower needs servicing or any serious work doing, send it to someone who knows what they are doing. As Nick says above Keith Luck is a good bet.
