Gearbox output yokes

Post by Andrew1967 »

I've got a few NOS rubber coupling output shaft yokes .

They wont fit onto the diff output shafts on the gearbox I'm using on HOY and appear to have one less spline.

Presuming they are early ones but can't find any details anywhere ?

I've got an 'S' hardy spicer output shaft here in my hand, it has 23 splines on a 1" diameter shaft. I don't have a later yoke box on hand to compare it to, but from a quick google 22A374 looks like 21 splines as standard.

IIRC the early cone gearboxes with the smaller 62mm output bearing and narrow mainshaft also used thinner driveshafts, so it wouldn't surprise me if they also had different output shafts on the diff.

Update: I just pulled the output shafts off a c.1960 22a145 box that I have in the basement. It has 20 spline outputs, on a 7/8" diameter shaft. So they were definitely different to the 22A374 later type yokes.

I'll measure the diameter but that sounds like what they are Iain.

Thanks for the quick reply :)

The Early boxes to ~ about 61 (maybe 60?) ~ had 20 spline output shafts.

Then, they changed to 21 spline shafts.

Had one in just last week in fact.

Why ? I doubt even God would know why the change.

While I think of it, the early Drive Shafts up to about the same period, had 18 splines in to the CV, then they changed to 19 splines.

Yes, you have to jump into the way back machine to run into early axles and out puts. I haven't had one in my hand since the late 60s. Steve (CTR)

Presumably they'd fit my 1960?
