KAD oil dipstick setting
Hello Guys
I juste rebuild my 1293 for rally
I replace the dipstick and dipstick tube with the KAD kit
How can I set my oil level accurately ?
The engine have a KAD pinion housing so less oil in the gearbox I guess? but require more oil because of the 13 rows oil coiler
How can I set the good quantity?
Thank you
Charles

Re: KAD oil dipstick setting
Compare the new KAD dipstick & tube with the old one. Presumably they both fit in the same hole in the block ?

Hello Yes, same hole
But I never had the tube and the dipstick before
My engine is not a S but a PreA+ 1293
Probably from a marina or a 1275GT

On my cars the top mark on the dipstick is 225 mm below the top of the flange of the block.

You can look in the BMC tec spec; & establish the official Sump Oil Quantity + then add the extra oil capacity of your oil cooler .. carry out a full oil change measuring the oil fill amount going in .. re-calibrate the new Dipstick to suit the actual oil in the sump after a engine run .. worked for me

Re: KAD oil dipstick setting
If the oil cooler doesn’t drain back, once it’s full it’s full and it doesn’t affect the dipstick. Pinion housing won’t make much difference but you could always check with KAD?

Re: KAD oil dipstick setting
Just to add more to the confusion,,,,,
At FULL on the Stick, the Oil Level comes about 4 mm over the center line of the Layshaft / Mainshaft of the Gearbox. It's not a wise idea to have the Oil much higher than that or there's a risk of burning out the smaller bearings in the Gearbox (like the tiny Nose Bearing on the Mainshaft). The original Dip Sticks weren't terribly accurate.
I'll have a measurement for this level from the Sump Rail, I'll post it it a little later when I'm in the office.

Assuming the oil cooler and filter are filled with oil can't you just drain the sump and refill with the specified quantity, 4.8l or whatever, then mark your stick? This would allow for any variation caused by the pinion housing.

Re: KAD oil dipstick setting
Get rid of the fancy KAD item and use the factory dip stick and tube. Not once have I ever had an issue with a std dipstick, and I been building engines and servicing road, race & rally Minis for a long time.
"The original Dip Sticks weren't terribly accurate" Hahahahahahahaha. Says who?

CL of the Main Shaft is 126.7 mm below the Sump Rail, putting the Full Level at 122 mm.

Hello Guys
Thank you for all your advices
As for me the best solution should be:
Fill the radiator, fill the filter and put 4,6 or 4,8 liters in the engine and to set the dipstick?
Thank you
