According to my information Cherry Red was used from 1959 to 1969 and the BMC code is RD-4. Can anyone help me in finding a supplier of this paint?
thanks,
Brian

Re: Trying to Source Cherry Red Paint
Where in the world are you Brian.
And what paint system do you want ?
Cellulose, 2 pack, P/U ?
Cellulose is more difficult to source in the UK now but can still be found.
Or is it the mixing formulation you need ?
I used PPG cellulose from my local supplier 30 years ago, but that supplier has gone, as has PPG, so finding an equivalent is the tricky bit.
The different manufactures will have their own formulations so ask your supplier if they can trace RD4 and work from there.

Re: Trying to Source Cherry Red Paint
I'm in Canada (southern Ontario). My daughter bought the car in England while living there and we shipped it over on her return. It's a 1961 Morris Mini.
I took all the paint codes I could find to my local supplier and he couldn't find it. The car has been repainted red but I'm sure it's not the correct Cherry Red. He can come pretty close to matching what's on the car by using a spectrophotometer. From other cars I've seen though, I think it should have more orange in it. My reference says the approximate colour is maroon.
I'd prefer to use old style single stage paint (cellulose ?), which my supplier can still provide.
thanks for the reply,
Brian

Re: Trying to Source Cherry Red Paint
Definitely nothing like Maroon, which, is purpleish red......
Cherry red is a slightly darker colour than Tartan Red.....Not quite as bright and lively as Tartan......
I'm also in Southern Ontario, 20K South East of Smithville........

Re: Trying to Source Cherry Red Paint
yeah, calling it maroon seems odd.
The same reference says the approximate colour for Tartan Red is red but again Damask Red (RD-5, 1959 - 77) approximates maroon. It says Tartan Red ran from 1959 to 71 and the BMC code is RD-9.
I guess what I need is the formulation for BMC code RD-4 if it's out there anywhere.
fingers crossed

Re: Trying to Source Cherry Red Paint
I believe I've found it.
Carquest here in Canada is a supplier of R-M paints. I had an old R-M code which is no longer in use but the supplier was very helpful so when I told him I was looking for BMC Cherry Red he found it under the original BMC code (RD04).
