my only top tip would be to use a plastic fork to get the needle off with minimum damage.
you can test speedo by using a very slow electric drill and an old cable

Re: Dismantling a speedo
OK. Thanks Rich. Next question: what causes the needle to fluctuate? Can I repair? Anyone got any instructions on dismantling/ rebuilding & 70's style "clocking" etc. Yes don't worry, this isn't Arthur Daly here. Just want to zero the speedo. I am sure my car has done well in excess of 300000 miles but don't think after 50 years it is really relevant what miles it has covered. Cheers.

it can be many things, the speedo its self, binding cable, tight speedo drive or even a worn main bearing causing the gear kit to 'pulse' the cable.

Re: Dismantling a speedo
the inner speedo cable and the eccentric gears in the speedo are the main causes of fluctuation in a mini speedo

by the way do not use a plastic fork to pop the pointer!
Grab the speed cup and turn the pointer anticlockwise
