22a104 early gearbox

Post by moonet1 »

Hi all, thanks for adding me to the forum.

I have what looks like an early gearbox on my mk1 850 and it has developed a nasty fault of jumping out of first gear. From what I have read, this is a common problem with the 3 syncho box and I believe this one is brass cone?

Problem now is do I replace with a later box type, from post 1962 or try and source fairly not existent spares to re-build what i have?

Any thoughts or previous experience of these early type gearbox's is much appreciated!

I have managed to acquire a later 22G68 box and will swap out for the brass syncho one. I will attempt to repair the 22a104 and keep to sell with the car.

Don't suppose anyone has a First Gear Hub and laygear from a 22a104 lying around that they want to sell?

Thanks

Hi Andrew,

Any luck finding any early Mk1 gearbox parts amongst your spares?

If you have an early 1st gear Hub and G40 layshaft, that would be brill.

Many thanks

Hi Tim,

Massive apology, I completely forgot.

I will definitely have a NOS cone type 1st/2nd hub assembly but will need to check for a G40 .. I did have one but whether I still have it.

I'll get the torch out tomorrow after work and have a look in the shed ;)

No worries Andrew. I appreciate you are busy. I am just wondering whether it is worth rebuilding the old 22A104 box? I guess if parts are available then it might be :)

Thanks again

Depends on how much the car is going to be used I guess Tim.

Ok, the cone type is not as good as baulk ring but if you are only going to do a few hundred or thousand miles a year, it’ll last for years, especially in an unstressed 850, if new parts are fitted.

My thoughts on them subject anyway. I guess others will disagree ;)

I had 73,000 miles on my first cone box 850 wagon, including downshifting into first on most stops.......Took it apart to re-ring the engine, cone rings were fine, first gear was no worse than ones I have taken apart that were never downshifted into first.......

Still working on identifying the exact gearbox and gearset I have, it's definitely quite an early cone type magic wand, did you manage to source some parts? Has anyone made some new cones if they really are brass should not be too difficult to shrink some on and turn to size?

So far I can see I need all bearings 2 cones and a new layshaft shaft gears actually look serviceable

It might be worth contacting a Minor/A35/A40/Midget specialist.
