Gearstick.

Post by GarysMK1 »

Ive a 1960 850 Mini Seven with wand gearstick. Can i stick an 1100 or 1275 engine and box in it and still connect my wand shift to it or is this not possible ?

In a word no. Or at least not without a lot of work which would be expensive unless you do it yourself, and many would say pointless.
Switching to an 1100 or 1275 was a very common swap back in the day. But as these came with the remote gearchange the simple solution was to cut your own opening in front of the crossmember a la Cooper.
The alternative is to use say a late 4 synchro magic wand box fitted to the new power unit. People have done this so it's not out of the question. But it's more expensive than cutting a hole.
You can also I believe just graft a magic wand diff casing onto a later box. Someone on here will have the knowledge on what you need to do this.
Why do you want to keep the gearchange everyone wanted to lose back in the day? Originality?

If you do change it all, be sure to mothball the original stuff as it will help to keep the value of the car as well as having fun with more power. You may want to think of the brakes too by the way ;-)

I changed mine back to magic wand change. Why? Because I wanted to, and the remote change I had was completely worn out.

My engine is a 1098
Gearbox is 22G1128 (4 synchro)
I changed the diff cover to the early magic wand type (off a 3 synchro)
Replaced the bushes in the diff cover for the shift rod (they were oval from wear)

As mine is all rebuilt, the shifting is really nice and direct - less wear and slop than the old worn out remote. I definitely am happy with my choice

Nice work. I can see why you would want to keep the wand on an early car.
Maybe you could do a write up for the 'Mini related how to' sticky at the top of the technical thread. I'm sure some other forum members might be interested in doing this swap.

In my ‘62 850 I dropped in a 1275 with full synchro gbox and wanted to keep the magic wand. But to do that had to use a housing off a moke and then modify the stick to suit the mini. Took a bit of fiddling, but worked a treat, nice and tight, shifts really well, and still sort of looks like original magic wand.

I have been using the AA 1128 style trannys due to the diff cover using the sandwich plate. I'm currently out of AA 1128s and magic wand covers. I'd like to do one for my early UK Moke. I'm beginning to think the correct three synchro will bring higher price if I sell. Steve (CTR)
