Clear petrol hose

Post by ricardo »

Does anyone know where to get petrol hoses that are able to resist / safe to use with modern petrol:
- clear (plain)
- braided type: like this one

I've been looking and found some but I'm not sure which are actually safe to run. Thanks

I've found with all these clear type of hoses they are Plastic based. After a while they get very hard, I've had some that got brittle from getting so hard and when it cracked, the edges were as sharp as broken glass.

There should be some European Standards (EN) concerning petrol hose quality.

Try looking under the bonnet of your modern car and see what is written on the fuel hoses.

As Spider says, the clear hose goes brittle.

With the increasing ethanol content in petrol, you really should use the modern stuff.

SAE J30 covers fuel hoses.

SAE J30 R6 is OK for low ethanol fuel, such as E5.

For E10 you will need SAE J30 R9 hose

I don't think those old style clear hoses are recommended for modern fuels. They used to go hard and yellow with old 4*, so I'd hate to think what the new biofuels will do to it.

It's fuel hose which you do not want springing a leak, especially in a hot engine bay. The clear stuff may look "correct", but won't do for long should the worst happen!

Here's a picture of what high ethanol content fuel does to SAE 30 R7 hose

I can't wait for us to get that enviromentally friendly E10 stuff

Wife's morris traveller has been playing up recently.. checked the 2 year old braided fuel feed from pump to carburettor this evening and its literally turned to slime on the float chamber inlet.

Minisprinter wrote: Fri Jul 17, 2020 8:12 pm The quality of fuel hose is something I tend to bang on about, but I'll keep this one short, there are only a couple of brands of fuel hose worth using and they are Codan, Mocal, ( same as Codan really) Goodyear and Gates Barracade every other brand will fail in a short time, yes I know it's a bit spendy and can be hard to get hold of, but for peace of mind worth it. As for clear hose I'm pretty sure it's an MOT fail

Have experience of this R9 Fuel Pipe that looks like Black Rubber ? ..this Fuel Pipe is going brittle hard when in use in about 2 years .. when taken off & bent with my Fingers this pipe just splits open on the circumference of the Pipe .. yet the spare new & unused R9 Pipe left on the shelf is still flexing as purchased @ day one ..anyway i have now replaced with J30R9 spec; Fuel Pipe suitable for E10 Petrol,. got mine from Demon Tweeks ..It is not cheap but if it lasts longer that 2 years that must be a saving :?

To note that i do use Briggs & Stratton "Fuel Fit" .. yes it does keep my Petrol alive for more than 10 months however i wonder if that stuff added into my crap e Petrol has some influence on hardening up this R9 spec fuel pipe ?.. whatever we will see how J30R9 Petrol Pipe survives during the next 2 years
