Hi all,
Have just taken the engine out of my recently acquired 1960, it’s not the original as far as I can tell (no engine plate) it has the following:-
Block number 12a497
Head 12g202
Gearbox 22g1128 magic wand
Also has a small plate with 1000 on the back
And the numbers A10a8 on the back of the block (can’t find any info on those)
From what I can tell it’s a 997 head on a normal block? With a later mk3 s gearbox? Has hardy spicers and had just a single carb. Bit of a mishmash, until I get to take it all apart can anyone shed any info? I was hoping it could have been a 997 cooper engine but probably not.
Thanks
Jay.

Re: Engine identification please
If it’s got a 1000 tag, would only be a 997/998.
With a 202 head would also match the up top half.
Check what’s inside it, may help a little more.

MiniSpares state that 12a497 is thick deck Pre A+ 998

Sounds like yo have a bit of a ménage à trois
But a magic wand with a 998, could this be from an Elf or Hornet?

Re: Engine identification please
12A497 is 998 or 1098 A series block. The 12G202 was also fitted to the 1098 engine.
When you say HS joints. Do you mean the rubber/metalastic crosses?
Some mk3 gearboxes used an adapter plate under the diff case instead of a remote control gearchange. This enabled a magic wand to be fitted. Only seen them on a van/pickup 1969 to 1972 (and on my rebuilt 1098 with 4 synchro gearbox)

Re: Engine identification please
Thanks guys,
I guess I’ll have to open it all up and check inside, ideally I’d like to see non flat pistons (cooper 997) and some numbers in the gearbox to say it’s from a mk3 cooper s (approx 1970-1)
On the other hand it could just be a 997/998 with a cooper head and a standard mk3 gearbox.
It does indeed have the rubber/metal crosses for the driveshafts, I haven’t checked for an adaptor plate yet.
Or I could have a 1098 setup just with a cooper head?
Thanks
Jay

Re: Engine identification please
1098 had the 202 head from the factory.
Apart from the 1000 tag on the back it sounds like a similar spec to our standard 1100 engines;
202 head
1128 gearbox
Magic wand
497 engine block

Re: Engine identification please
Yes, they came with either depending on the year and the car they were fitted to
