hydro tower fixings...

Post by cheesebadger »

Hi all,

Just looking at ordering some bits ready to start putting things back together.
It looks like hydro cars need different bolt to attach the front subframe to the cross member, which has prompted a few questions...

1. Hydro frames don't require a spacer between the tower and cross member, as they are slightly taller than a dry frame.
2. If the hydro are smaller diameter than the dry bolts, then what is positioning the subframe relative to cross member? Just the clamping force?
3. I can't remember (and didn't take a photo of this area) but does the retainer sit on top of the cross member? Assembly order, subframe to cross member, drop nylon sleeve through hole in cross member, fit retainer on top of cross member, fix with 2 bolts?
4. The dry cars had a locktab washer, my research suggests that these are not fitted to wet cars. Do wet cars just use spring washers?

Any help appreciated,
Cheers,
Rich

My 66 Morris had studs with nuts and spring washers plus the nylon tube and retainer. Austins I believe had bolts. That is not set in stone as sometimes, depending which factory made them and what was in stock, they all had bolts. Pick and Mix construction.

My 1966 Austin Cooper S is wet and is as you described in #3 above.
I do not have a spring washer, just a flat washer.

Think I should have said flat washer.

Sorry to reopen my original post, but does anyone know what colour the retainers should be painted?

When removed mine were the same colour as the panels, but it looks like someone had done a basic spray job in the past.

I have blasted them and tried my hand an DIY zinc plating, which looks ok. You can even see the "MOWOG" stamped letters.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,
Rich

As far as I know they are black but would be interesting to know as need to get mine painted this week.

My 65 Morris S had bolts rather than studs although my 60 850 Morris has studs.
