Is this the real thing or a fake?

Post by AndyPen »

Went hunting for my old Morris Cooper Badge today and the wife reminded me that I still had some 'old stuff' in a box that I had promised to clear out of a top bedroom cupboard. Still not found the original to compare it to unfortunately.

Another 'been there since the early 90s' story, but is this for real? Anything I can check?

I'm sure there was a thread here as well, but can't find it???

Andy, I have a couple of genuine one s and a repro...will try to get some pictures later...in the meantime...could you post a pic. of the back side of your badge? From what I can see...looks original.
Cheers

The modern ones look a bit more like a fat cat than a bull. The bull also lost his manhood

I don't think there were any repros in the early 1990's.

Originals iirc were made by J Fray in B'ham.

No J Frey on this or the Morris Cooper rear badge that was with it - I imagine it would be easy to to spot if there were?

The BMC box says 1967, so I guess the box is original ;-)

I’m not sure that the Morris Cooper badges had J Fray cast into them ?

There are two distinct animals on the badges I’ve seen. A bull on the genuine one, complete with tackle or a fat cat on the repros .

My original has not got J Fray on the back.

Interesting Andrew - my hopes rise again then?

Still can't seem to find my original one - somewhere deeply safe!!!

In case anyone is wondering, I got all these bits and bobs from a BMC dealership that closed in Neath, South Wales and put them away carefully, or so I thought. A brand new uncollected passenger door was another star find, as was a rev counter and a capillary temperature gauge.

My S will have some nice new bits on it ;-)

Sadly this Mk2 one in the same box probably got crushed as it has snapped. Luckily though, right behind where the trim would go so worth keeping.

I think this a real deal ;-)

Definitely original Andy! Fantastic badge. My original doesn’t have Fray stamped either.

Seems pretty conclusive now Andy .

The Mk2 S badge is certainly worth using on a car as well :)

I well remember a local BMC garage auction, dozens and dozens of Mk1 Mini panels and tons of spares. Bought a few bins worth but nowhere near enough that I should have.

Andy...some pictures of genuine and repros…..
Others have mentioned how the 'bull' got fatter over the years....he did
MK2 S badge should look like the one attached...from the back...repros are solid.

Can i muddy the water .. Unipart took on the Parts supply & distribution business from BMC / Leyland ( was it late 60,s early 70,s? ). Unipart got their business establish in Cowley with the stock holding from BMC / Leyland then later on also started to put parts into Unipart own brand Boxes.. They also got other suppliers involved in supplying OE parts & they were not always the original maker of our BMC/ Leyland OE Parts .. so were those later on Unipart supplied parts official Fakes?

Approved fakes???

I'll be checking the dates on the other badges and packs now - ha ha ;-)

The Mk1 door has the person's name on it and a collection date of 1967... I got all this in the early 90s so somebody was putting a little stash of uncollected mini bits and bobs to one side I'd imagine? The parts guy alerted our local club - so could have been him making a little on the side??

As said, must have happened all over the place as dealerships closed ;-)
