Boot soundproofing

Post by IAIN »

A question ... would a 66 cooper have had sound proofing on the boot floor like this SDL in the picture ?

Also has anyone got a picture of a cooper with original sound proofing glued under the parcel shelf in the boot that they could share ?

Iain
Answer is yes...ish!
A couple of my S's still have the original felt in the boot....first, it wasn't glued...just lays there. my 1071 with one tank has the felt as per your picture...the other car/s have it cut back for the RH tank.
The piece that is glued under the parcel shelf is really thick...an inch at least...will try to get you a picture later.

They started to use the felt in and around the hydro introduction I seem to recall?

We still have it in our sept 64 and 66 cars, both of which are very original. Interestingly perhaps, the felt comes with the boot board bracket cut outs, whatever the model.

Here's the 64 ;-)

Sorry for the delay Iain.....finally, had a minute....here is a picture of one I took from my 67 S during the restoration.
It is quite thick...approx. 1 inch.

Thanks for the picture D.
I cut out some soundproofing to cover under the shelf. That confirms that it should go over the tank and side to side. I just had enough left to double it up to make it thick enough. :)

Guess you did this before you installed the tanks Iain.....I tried doing one after the tanks were in place...next to impossible...especially when you gave contact cement all over it LOL! Tanks came out...less than 10 minutes...job done.
Cheers

1966 Austin Cooper S
USA

Trying to locate this material (needlefelt, underfelt, jute, etc) or original used pieces.

It looks like Woolies and Segal Motor Trimmings sells but shipping to USA is very expensive.

Looking for USA suppliers.
No luck so far.

Just for info - the Mk2 on ebay shows the material being pulled down under the shelf.

Off the subject a bit, but this Cooper S (Ebay, above thread) is a typical example of those ".....I'm going to restore it next summer......" blokes who NEVER get around to it. But dream that they will. In the meantime the car gets worse and worse.

In the meantime, now that money is VERY tight, they think that they're going to make a killing

I am chasing such a very late Cooper hidden up round these parts by such a dream-world tosser. That's the end of my Sunday rant
