Pre-66 Optional RH Fuel Tank Support Bracket
Hello,
On cars with optional right hand tanks fitted, how was the support bracket installed? Welds or pop-rivets?

Re: Pre-66 Optional RH Fuel Tank Support Bracket
My mk2 had extra tank lower bracket fitted with small self tapping screws. Presume earlier cars with added tank would be same.

Mine was pop riveted in, but I guess it depends on who installed it?
Only the top bulkhead bracket was bolted.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have a picture of the riveted support panel? Do you know if they are aluminum or steel?

I am wanting to know if the pop-rivets are steel or aluminum.

Re: Pre-66 Optional RH Fuel Tank Support Bracket
I'm sorry I don't know as I took them out in the very early 90s when I stripped the car ;-( I just recall drilling them out.
The base was metal and had some rubber on it - though I have heard that some used cork.

The few cars I have dealt with, were all aluminum pop rivets....

Re: Pre-66 Optional RH Fuel Tank Support Bracket
I have two one 1967 and one 1968.
Both riveted with aluminium rivets with thin rubber strip on top surface under tank
Both were fitted after dealer delivery, as neither show on the heritage certificates, but I'm guessing that Appleyards fitted them in 1967 and 1968 being the delivery dates. they dont look to be DIY.
The top brackets are bolted.
Hope this helps.

Always been riveted with alloy rivets...this is my 65 with a factory installed optional tank. The straps have an oily based thick paper (Like a thin roofing felt) glued to the straps and the seating plate.

Re: Pre-66 Optional RH Fuel Tank Support Bracket
They wouldn’t show on a heritage certificate with those dates as by then they were a standard fitting. Only optional fittings were recorded in the factory ledgers.trevorhp wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 10:51 am I have two one 1967 and one 1968.

That doesn't reflect on the cars I have...the picture I posted is an original car...my others also have alloy rivets.

Screws are for the dealer (or customer) installed optional tank.......
Factory fitted were pop rivets.....or, in some cases spot welded maybe....
