Hi guys, getting some of the prep done on my 66 s, and looking for some tips and advice from some more experienced members, i successfully sprayed a red sportspack in a booth last year, with little imperfections in the paint and buffed beautifully.
The bit i am nervous about is the black roof, it is in 2k HB body 534 grey primer at the moment and i struggle to see any imperfections in it, would it be better mixing the primer with some 2k black?
I Block sand with abranet usually and get a good result with a guide coat to see any dints, filler imperfections etc
I just wonder if anyone has any other good tips for approaching this?

My experience with black paint and the roof is the worst for it is that you’re going to be painting it twice. You’ll think it’s perfect and paint it and then notice bits that aren’t right.

Having just done this with my own '66 S & black roof, I can say you would be doing yourself a service doing another round of guide coat and blocking. Hell, do it two more times - it will only help bring any issues to the surface before you get to the topcoat.
Also, use really long, flexible sanding blocks. I made my own from a 3-foot strip of plexiglass with a 1" foam strip glued to the back that holds adhesive-backed sandpaper. This can hug the curvature of the roof, for a nice even sanding surface.
Then, when you're spraying the roof - be generous with the paint coats. I don't mean putting them on thick (it will run!) but do an extra coat or two than you normally would, to sand out any imperfections without burning through the paint to the primer. If you're doing base/clear then it's not as difficult, compared to single-stage.

What I did on mine was prime it with 2pack filler primer. Then when dry I sprayed some matt b;ack over it, very lightly so that you could run a rag over it and lightly smear the paint. leave to dry. Then with a 600 block I sanded it down till I couldnt see any black overspray. This I did twice and the roof was ready for painting. Its now just like a mirror
