E5 Fuel - flipping fiddle!!!

Post by AndyPen »

After about a 3 month lay up I opened up the float chambers in the SDL 970 before starting it, just to check and yes, droplets of water were in there and not much fuel!!

I decided to step by step pump some out of the bottom of the tank before starting the car into a jar and no more water was evident after the jar was about 1/4 full.

For the first time in a while the car started first time - so lesson learned!!

I keep all my old cars with the MINIMUM of fuel in the tank, so I can top up with fresh before a trip out.

After a couple of months they will be very awkward to start, have no power, and will only drive with full choke - until some fresh fuel comes through.

Surprised that my cars all started after the winter of not running .. they all had about 3 to 4 litre of the best ??? E5 Petrol left in the fuel tanks .. the magic fix was that each had the Briggs & Stratton "Fuel Fit " added.. this is mix into the fuel tank stuff they provide for over winter Mowers & Chainsaws.( available on ebay about £6 a pot)
Please do not think i suggest that you use this "Fuel Fit" stuff because it has Not Worked for me in previous years  .. However perhaps me correctly Fuel Fit doseing up E Petrol in a small quantity of fuel was possible the reason these engines started & do run all ok.

In the current situation i will keep Fuel Fit in my tanks during the coming months because in the past i have had E Petrol go off in a matter of weeks.

Can i suggest to also check your rubber fuel hoses condition .. as my replaced flex Hoses are supposed to be suitable for this E Petrol & have only lasted about 18 months and some sections of this hose are now rock hard .. or can it be that" Fuel Fit" wrecks my rubber hoses only time will tell :o

Keep Safe .

On the subject of fuel hose if you are replacing it then make sure that it is suitable for E10 as this is what will be introduced next year in the UK.

I would suggest that you get SAE J30 R9 Fuel/Oil hose. This is rated to 10 Bar so is also suitable for injection cars.

The minimum spec is SAE 30 R6. This is for low pressure fuel (carb) systems.
