Change from positive to negative earth

Post by whistler »

I'm resurrecting a 66 mk1 super deluxe and pondering whether to retain the pos earth or switch to negative. The engine will be a 1098 with electronic distributor which I will be having curved to suit.
My other negative earth engines run 65dm4 distributors quite succesfully without any problems, so I am hoping to convert one to A series drive for this engine.
I know about repolarizing the dynamo but found no info regarding the ignition system.
Anyone done this conversion?

For an overview of polarity conversion, see the tech article linked below. It is written with the expectation that the reader wants to convert from positive to negative earth.

I am only familiar with 65D distributors being electronic and therefore, negative earth. My preference is to have negative earth so you never have to worry about using modern accessories and jump starting.

I posted in that thread.

Haven't had an answer yet about whether the electronic module on the 65dm4 distributor will work on a positive earth system.

It is electronic so it will not work with reverse polarity.

The following may also come into consideration. The only 1100 engines I have seen were regular A-series. I thought the 65DM4 distributors were for A+ blocks. If your 1100 block is not A+ OR if there is not a regular A-series version of the 65DM4 can you even make this distributor swap?

Electronic distributors don't work on positive earth. That's the answer I have been looking for.
I did say in my post that I would be attempting to convert the 65dm4 to an A series drive.
