What’s on roof under the headlining

Post by roymck »

Stripped out the headlining and there is no insulating felt on inside of roof , previous owner left it out when rebuilding the car .
Question is should I replace with a sheet of insulating felt or more modern self adhesive bitumen pads ?
Why’s it there anyway , to stop roof drumming, reduce condensation or reduce heat build up ?

What’s going to be best ?

I'm moving on to the point in my resto where i need to start thinking abut this as well. I've always believed this stuff is there to help as sound deadening and stop any 'drumming' you might get with the larger panels. A friends mini van used to be really bad for drumming at certain speeds with no sound deadening on the side panels.

i've got the coarse felt sound deadening on the underside of my roof. I've seen dynamat (i think that what they called it) and other more modern bitumen sound deadening products being used YouTube but i'm just going mask up the underside of the roof when i come to repainting as the felt is in good condition and so is the underside of the roof. The headliner frame looks like it was pressing lightly on the felt when it was taken out and having never used any modern sound deadening i didn't want to use anything that may be too bulky and prevent the headlining going back in easily. I will need some sound deadening for the rear quarters and other areas so i'll be interested to hear what other people have used as well.

its a 1/4" felt in two pieces...dont get felt thats thicker or your headlining wont seat properly...

Mark posted a picture on this thread but it,s gone now due to upgrade problems , but it was a self adhesive closed cell foam . Now been advised don’t use self adhesive bitumen style sheets on the roof as in really hot weather they can unstick and fall onto the headlining, so going with a foam sheet .

I have just bought some - really lightweight - hope the glue is up to the task ;-)

Exactly the same stuff I have used and the same seller . Arrived this morning and yes it’s super sticky . One tip I cut mine 800mm wide and I think it was a tad too wide , although there is room for the 6mm foam in the middle as the headlining bows bend towards the edge the gap diminishes so it was a bit tight to get headlining slid into place . All in now so yes good stuff.
