silly question - best way to fit carpet studs to the sill?

I have seen them screwed in with self tappers I think, but the originals were riveted in.

I am wary of screwing in too far and going through the inner sill as well, but what rivets should I use?

I asked mini spares but they don't do them... so any ideas as to suppliers folks? Or neat tricks that you guys know maybe?

I used short pop rivets but in order to close them correctly I used a short length of brake pipe on the nose of rivet gun to enable it to fit inside the stud.

Pretty easy to do I find fitting the other half in the carpet the hardest part

I did a similar thing to Daz1968 but used a small nut instead of the pipe.
We picked up some short rivets at the NEC Classic Car show.
I need to fit the other bit to the carpet too, not done it before and not looking forward to it.

As for fitting the parts t the carpet it's fairly easy. When I did it, it was the last thing I did. I made sure the carpet was laying as it should, felt for the top of the stud through the carpet, pushed the bit with the spikes on through the carpet whilst it was over the stud, flipped the carpet over, pushed the round plate over the spikes and then bent the spikes with pliers to hold it all together.

PS As some carpets have a tendency to shrink a little, you might want to let things settle a bit before fitting the studs.

The front carpet fixings should be like this. The bracket is welded to the sill and the fastener and spacer are riveted to the bracket - the original is on the left and replacement on the right

when I stripped the car one inner sill was still complete, so I took these off and kept them safe - in the 90s no less. I was was way more organised than I thought back then and tagged everything

So yep, exactly as you say Simon, and am I right in thinking that only the front carpet had the spacers to lift them higher?

After reading about the problem of getting the correct length spacers and rivets I made my own carpet brackets and fitted a anchor nut underneath before spot welding the brackets to the floor. Now I just have to match the bolt length to suit.
