I have a couple of sets of Mk1 5 bolt bumpers/corner bars etc which are in good nick but could do with a rechrome. Does anybody offer this service at sensible money. I am based in Essex. Cheers. Mark
I doubt you will find anyone who is cheap, but the quality of the result will undoubtedly be higher if you use an original as a basis rather than the universally dodgy modern repros.
At a push I suppose I could use modern 3 bolt repros but what is the disadvantage with these?
If I try to mount my overiders on my modern stainless MS bumpers they do not align all around the total contact area - will the MS chrome ones fit better?
To be more specific, if I try to mount my original overiders on my MS (DPB10165MS)stainless bumpers, at best they lean slightly forward and there is a large gap between the overider and bumper at the bottom.
Would MS part number 14A9871 be any better because it's cheaper to buy one of these than to get my original 5 bolt bumper decently re-chromed.
Mine lean too far forward, and the coner bar is also WAY off where it should be. The only other option I could think of is to reprofile the over riders to suit the bumpers. But you'd then never be able to use them again on the correct shape bumper.
If you find some that fit, please let me know which you use. Im going to head into minispares in the next week to see if I can try my over riders out on various different types. I'll let you know how I get on.

OK you'll be pleased to know I've now got my 5 bolt bumpers with overriders.
Only the N/S/R handlebar needs replacing/re-chroming but I think I'll get a stainless one from MS as it will be cheaper and hopefully will fit OK. (Guru?)
What I need to know now is how do I protect the chrome that remains beyond what the eye can usually see, e.g. the chrome behind the top lip of the bumper? Here it is peeling away and the pitting cannot be fully polished out of rust. The obvious chrome (that the eye can usually see) is pitted also but to a lesser degree and I think it looks good as it demonstrates its originality.
Also how do I protect the steel that is usually unchromed on the underneath of the overriders and bumpers? There are copious amounts of rust here but the underlying steel is solid.
Finally, once I have fully treated and polished the bits, what is the best method for putting away into storage for 6 months or so whilst they await their attachment? WD40? Light grease?
