Yoko 0032 V Avon CR66ZZ

Post by mk1 »

There has been much discussion about what is the best 10" road legal tyre for hillclimbing.

Well, after back to back tests Adam & I are still undecided. .....

Yes. But I assume they had been shaved or were well scrubbed.

By the end of the day I was within about 1/4 a second of my best time but I was fighting the car all day.

It was not a pleasant experience.

Not sure it's hugely relevant but Avon's are also quite abit heavier than Yokys aren't they?

to be fair to the Avons I always found that due to the sidewalls they would always take a lap (in circuit racing) before they 'came on', I suspect that unbuffed they will behave like cr65's and need a couple of bends (in hillclimbing) before the heat gets into them

it may be that in hillclimbing a car would need a bit more toe in just to stabilise the back and get the back tyres a little hotter

Much discussion about this in the rallying fraternity. Yes the Avon are dear but last many times as long.

I’ve been using Avon’s for a couple of years now, partly on Rich’s recommendation. I’ve not experienced anything as extreme as that, but with the heat you put into the front tyres and then cold rears there would be a considerable grip differential.

Dependant on the rally, I won’t always use them on the rear as, once warmed up, They have too much grip for the handbrake to overcome.

The fact you felt you were fighting them all day to me says there’s lots of grip, and hence speed, in them to come.

Wrong wrong wrong

Guess who has swopped 9 Avons for a load of work done on someones car so that Mr Clever Dick would have lots of grip at all times

and who has just entered Harewood....

I vote for the Avon's , more grip and less understeer on 5" Wheels than the Yoko's on 6" wheels.

i never ran a brand new set, i don't know how they behave when new.
1st set i had were worn and 10 years old, still they performed very well,
The set i'm using now were shaved and did a test session on a race FIA Mk1, now in my car they perform very very well.

As Rich said, they do need to be warmed up... or you will be asking for a spin .

Cheers
Luis

A bit of oil helped . The A40 went off in front but a bit too late to take on board
