Side indicator sockets - dual vs. single filament?
Hi -
I'm putting together a parts order, and I need some new front indicator sockets. My '65 850 (export) had dual filament bulbs when I tore it down for restoration. It seems there are two different sockets - single filament and dual filament fitments. Unfortunately, the dual filament sockets seem to be less available. Can someone tell me what the main differences are? Is it the wiring connectors, bulb size....?

Bulb size is the same, but the dual filament bulb has two terminals on the end whereas the single filament one has a single terminal, the end cap provides the second (or third terminal). The bulb holders have to have the corresponding numbers of terminals to match. There are a couple of different styles but the one with the offset pins in the sidesof the end cap is the more usual on our cars, it makes the bulb align correctly. The designation of the dual filament end cap is BAY15D.

The bases are available seperately, or you can replace the whole lamp. Holden in the Uk stock a good range, but other places probably have them too. Holden's prices can be a bit steep.

Hello, isnt the dual filament for sidelights and indicators? are the glass lense parts flat or domed? if flat i think i know what there off, flat ones were used on healey sprites. If there the ones im thinking about im prity sure i have a spare one or perhaps even two.

your car was probably fitted with dual bulb holders due to local lighting regulations
i.e the side lamps had to be seperate from the main/dip headlamp unit.
they where never used on uk sold minis, in part, because after 1963 the indicator lamp had to show orange light - hence why all red rear lenses and clear front indicator lenses are often called 'export lenses'
the bulbs (in the front units) are different wattages as well, 21w for the indicator, 5w for the side marker, so the bulbs (and the bulbholders) are (or should be) the offset pin type.
the bulb holders also differ from those used with the flat glass lenses - the bulb sits further back in holder on that type of unit.
