MED flywheel bolt kit.

Post by Vegard »

Has anyone on here used this?

http://www.med-engineering.co.uk/produc ... lang_id=85

What happens is, the bolt head and washer is 5mm thicker than the standard setup. When I bolt it all together the clutch spring centre actually rests on the bolt head. This means that there's no room to depress the clutch.

When depressing the clutch, has anyone measured how much the clutch spring moves? 5mm, 10mm??

What do you expect its from MED?

It won't work & he'll tell you to get stuffed when you complain!

That what usually happens anyway.

I remember a while back Mark, when it was the other way around

"MED make great engines, no I won't have any of your complaints"

Could anyone tell me how much the clutch springs moves when the pedal is depressed?

I think Vegard, that if you check back that was never exactly the case!

I have never had any problems with the cranks that MED do, after all he seems to do 90% of all offset grinds in the country.

When I got him to build my engine I was happy to say that I thought for what he was offering it was a good price. Since then I was never happy with the engine, it was always flat when compared to units I had built myself, I then discovered that the std/std crank that I lent him was replaced by a 20/20 one (that is a SHITTY trick whatever way you look at it), that non of the internals had been balanced, that the set of lightened rods were total shite & that one was cracked. I could go on, but I hope that you get my point.

Apart from telling Whitton what I had found & getting told to Fuck off I never moaned, just learned my lesson.

Since then, Rich had a freshly built race engine let go on him, he was told to F off after a 6 month wait for a rebuild, & I know of AT LEAST 2 Arden 8 ports built by MED that have let go with less than run in mileage on them, I also know of other similar cases. Just in the above you have in excess of £30,000 worth of A series engines, all of which have blown up VERY QUICKLY with no come backs at all.

As you know I have never minced my words, I tend to say what I mean & mean what I say. Only a fool would stick to his guns with an opinion in the face of so much new evidence.

The truth is it appears that MED have not built a decent A Series engine since Simon wassisface left. But that's another story entirely!

You asked a question about a MED product, I gave you am honest answer. It was a lot less honest & longer that the one MED will give you if it does turn out to be faulty!

MED = Must End Disastrously

The "normal" movement at the slave cylinder end of a clutch arm is approx 15mm

So, that means that there are only a couple of mm at the clutch end, I cannot remember the ratio, and I haven't got one to measure.

Mark. I was pulling your leg, I know what you mean and feel ;)

I know you were, but anyone reading the above may have wondered where you & I were coming from.

I have never measured the movement at the clutch end of the arm but I would have thought 3 or 4 mm

PJ sent them an e-mail:

Hi LeeReceived the parts yesterday, I tried to fit one of the flywheel bolts, but it seems to leave to little room for the clutch to release. Have you experienced this problem before? It seems like the head of the bolt and the washer is thicker than the standard. Cheers Petter Jakob

Hi Petter I think you have assembled something incorrectly, we use these flywheelsbolts and key washers on all of our race engines and have no problems. Are you sure you have the locating keyway on the flywheel washer locatedinto the crankshaft and flywheel correctly ?? Kind regards, MED Race Technologies

'You sure you've got the one for pre-verto clutch? (Is there a difference?)

MED's look really thick tho... especially the washer.

Here's Swifts for comparison;

http://www.swiftune.com/Product/371/swi ... eyway.aspx

I compared Swift's washer with that from Minispares a few years ago... and they more or less the same thickness..
Cheers,

Well, they claim they use them in all their race engines and I take it that they don't use Vertos in those.... :?:

You see, its your fault!

Oh BTW, My full race engine didn't have one, so thats something else I was ripped off to the tune of.

Just a suggestion, have you tried the standard one? all OK?

Does this relate to how far on the taper on the crank the flywheel is sitting?

Doing all this in my head, it may not even be relvant! :?

No I didn't have the time to try a standard one. As this is a genuine 170hp engine reving to 8000 I didn't want to use the standard one ;)

I've got another engine that needs a flywheel. I'll try the bolt on that.

PJ just measured a "regular " setup, and there was 9-10mm clearance between the bolt and spring face. This might mean that the titanium flywheel is the culprit..

I know this is an old thread and I'm not getting in to the MED thing.

There should be a nominal 0.050" movement at the backing plate.
