Needles, Ratios and LibreOffice Updates...

Post by ianh1968 »

Firstly, the best bit of news that I have had in a while is that the
LibreOffice developers have been busy and have fixed a problem
that I reported a while back...

Some of the "Help Text" on my Needles and Ratios spreadsheets
has not been rendering correctly on all versions of LibreOffice
after version 3.4.5, so much of this handy information has not been
visible.

The next version of LibreOffice, ie 5.3, is about to be released and
will contain the fix - Watch this space...

In the meantime, I have been working on updated versions of both
Needles and Ratios and would be grateful for a small amount of
assistance/information if any members here can help.

Needles:
Any Stromberg users out there?
I bought the latest charts from Burlen and they list a needle called "45P"
twice, but with two completely different sets of diameter values.
If anyone has a set of needle charts for the Stromberg/Pierburg CD range
and these contain "45P", I'd be pleased to hear from you.

Ratios:
(1) I am looking to update the list of available drop gears and cannot find the
old post about the "economy" primary gear. This had 30 teeth, vs. the 29
teeth of the standard offering, but wasn't there a First Motion Gear with 28
teeth that could provide a double-overdrive?

(2) I currently have a modest list of tyre size (WRPM) values which are used
for accurately working out road speed and also in speedometer calibration.

Any additions to this would be gratefully received, this is what I have already:
(Plus the Dunlops from an ST Manual)

Compiled by Ian Hamilton, from various sources.
E&OE
This list is for 10" and 12" tyres, but I am aware that Mokes and other 'A' Series
engined cars may have larger rims. I've also got the 13" Dunlops
from the ST Manual... Spider, wot-u-got?

(3) The latest Ratios spreadsheet contains a fairly comprehensive Speedo Drive
facility which allows users to calculate various options available when messing
about with this sometimes confusing issue.

Is there a comprehensive list of speedo TPM values already in existance?
If not, wouldn't it be great if between us we could compile a list?
Even better if this could contain the scale, eg MPH or Km/h, the number and
position of any indicator lamps, gear change markers and any other information
that would be useful to anyone trying to identify or source a speedo...

I know that this is a busy post, so well done if you've managed to stay with it
so far! Any help would be really appreciated...

There is indeed an input gear with 28 teeth.

Thanks, Alex...
Any idea which vehicles it was used in?
Do you have a part number?

My very late Metro Clubman had a economy input & output gears as well as a 3.2 fd.

I have a NOS Rover 30 tooth primary gear on my desk, DAM 9373.

Looking at some microfiches, it looks like the economy input gear might be DAM 6337 and were used on all 1275s from 1988 onwards except for the MG, MG Turbo, Sport & GTA. '84-'88 I think the 1275 E (HLE?) was fitted with it.
The 998 never got it.

These tyres are out there as well:

145/80R10 69T: Marshal SR KR11

http://www.marshaltyre.co.uk/kr11-new.php

They don't seem to be listed on their webpage though (Unless I'm looking in the wrong place) but are made in China so that might put a few off. Never given me any gip though and seem to last quite well.

What I am trying to do is gather a set of known WRPM values for tyres for a Mini...
Do you know what the official WRPM is for these tyres, or the rolling circumference?
(As opposed to the circumference calculated from the profile which will be inaccurate).

I've added this tyre to the list anyway as it can be used for dual-purpose!

Great info, thanks Alex...

DAM6337 Appears correct as MiniSpares are listing used ones on their site...

The 3.211 diff gives:
... with 30/29 = 3.104
... with 29/28 = 3.100
... with 30/28 = 2.996

This begs the question "Why not just use another ratio diff?", particularly for the first
two permutations when a 3.105 diff could be used instead. The 2.966 is quite close
to a 2.950 differential.

Mark F has loaded up the latest versions of "Needles" and "Ratios" onto the main MK1 site...
(Thanks Mark!)

See here:

http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.u ... anical.htm

The LibreOffice software has also been updated and bug-fixed in version 5.3.
For anyone using Windows 8 onwards, I seriously recommend an upgrade...

Hi, a couple of additions for the Ratios spreadsheet.

Image

The D93J is the common SP Sport/Formula-R version and the D01J is a now discontinued trackday tyre... but one I am currently using on one of my Minis.

The 'revs per mile' are higher than one might expect based on the dimensions but quoted as at 100mph (heading wrapped).
Using the published diameter of 19.2", gives a figure of 1050?

Cheers
