Post by STG95F »

Am i correct in thinking that the mk2 rack has the centralization screw ? And the mk1 don't?

Bottom in photo is the - MK2 ?

I have come across a few MKII Racks without the centralisation Screw. I don't know if they were factory fitted or after market.

I think the most reliable way on the UK manufactured racks is to peel back the boot closest the pinion and count the teeth. You won't be able to count them all, but with the inner wound out on the pinion, if It's a MKII you'll count about 16 or 18 teeth (with more inside). Given that the MKI were 15 tooth and the MKII were 25, I think you'd easily and reliably know what you'd have.

Just to confuse matters further, there's an early and late MKI type Rack too and I don't think internals are interchangable.

I think there was en external difference between the pinions as well, but I'm not sure on what to look for there. I do know that the later MKI Pinions have a groove machined in to them, just below the splines for the column to ID them from the early types but that's about all I know.
