Hi,
Help needed for installation of rear wheel bearing oil seals, manual quote "fit the seal with the lips facing the bearing side for GT/S taper roller bearing hubs " ,but I am in double if the seals is there for stopping the grease out from hubs or it stops the water and mud going in the bearing?
Any experience on fitting it the other way round with bad result?
Which way should I fit it?
Also the right torque for the axle nuts? 65 ft/lbs is for ball bearing Mini? Or hand tight plus next slot hole to fit the pin? As most of the other car make manual?

The seals can go in either way and as per your pic, that is correct in line with the factory advice, however they are a slightly different design seal they were using at that time, and if fitted in the conventional way (ie, spring towards the bearing) the lips of the seal would rub on the bearing, hence why the recommendation to fit them the other way. The inner race of the ball types used at that time were a little thinner and so this wasn't an issue.
These days, I fit them spring side towards the bearing.
I also weld up the vent holes, they are fine on most road going cars, but for us doing creek crossings and the like, the hole only lets water in. I haven't had an issue from them by welding the vent hole (which was only there to allow for installation of the cap by the way) even after day after day of high speed, high load running. I think the later UK caps also have no hole.
Spider,
Very well illustrated on this subject and we are not aware of all this design related tech!
But if you come across on this rear bearings, they have the seals fitted in sorts of directions!
But the nuts torque are similar on most types of vehicles!
Thanks for all your info!
