the john brown ones are fine for a road car, if you like cleaning them, but I wouldn't use them in a hard use application.
there is a reason that the fia boys will not use them!

This is not a FIA car,but I would like to avoid to loose a wheel! lol
I will use MS wheels

no,
different factory
different moulds (his where just a scanned version of our wheel - that's why its not as sharp)
different alloy
no heat treatment

different paint treatment
different quality nuts and washers
like I said, his are fine on a cheap road car, or for lads on a budget, but for a seriously nice car, well, you wouldn't brush paint it and make a wiring loom out of house wire.......

Re: Minispares rose petal VS JBW rose petal
I have used both types in the past . The minispares ones are a better quality all round . The john brown ones do have a nicely polished rim so it all depends on what look and use your going for ... Here's a pick of the john brown ones and I've painted the spokes in silver and fitted some of marks hole converters .... Ken

Re: Minispares rose petal VS JBW rose petal
As with everything....you have to pay for quality and what you can afford.
I have a set of JBWs. They are great. They look great and with R7s needed no balancing at all. They are made in China....ok I get that.
The finish looks good and is standing up well.
I would say the quality of the nuts and washers is also good. They are very much "mass produced" though from drawn hex and round stainless bar stock. The spacers are machined alloy plates.
The spacers don't actually 'space' anything but merely fill the void created by the need to provide the offset to reduce the track of a car for FIA purposes but these aren't racing wheels.
In my opinion they are a great road car rim and equal anything you get on a new Toyota or Mazda.
You want better quality then I guess you buy MS ones.
You want the best.....you'll need to speak with Nick Vrostos.

Re: Minispares rose petal VS JBW rose petal
I have an interesting bit of info to add to the discussion.
As most people know I have been doing my wheel centre converters for a while now. When I made the first batch I checked to make sure that they fitted both the MS wheel & the JB wheel.
I have never had any problems with the MS wheels, but the hole in the centre of the JB wheel varies. I have had 2 instances where people have had to send the wheel centres back for extra machining.
If the size of the hole in the centre of JB wheels varies from batch to batch, there is no reason that all the other dimensions don't do the same.
Buy cheap, buy twice!

Re: Minispares rose petal VS JBW rose petal
I spoke to JB at the mini fair in Jan. They have a new company making the rosepetal wheels for them this year maybe this is why they have a variation in size. Paint finish is much better and available in Matt black and gloss black. So I'd say the gap in quality between them all is closer than before.

but you will never find anyone who has smashed a minispares wheel because it wasn't heat treated and was made of a low grade alloy.......
not the sort of thing that you want to happen on an expensive fia race car

I'm totally convinced with minispares wheel!
But sometimes minispares seems to have the same supplier than other mini spares dealer

Quite often Minispares ARE the supplier of other Mini dealers.

A frien of mine, bought a minsipares one, we compared it, it was the same, just the backplate was anodised on the MED FW

Re: Minispares rose petal VS JBW rose petal
I have no experience with these wheels,
however what i will say is that i have always said, you pay for what you get... but in recent times (and i will not name any companies) but some of the 'best' suppliers quality of products are absolutely shocking, to the point where I've even ended up throwing the item in the bin. The amount of money I've wasted rebuilding my car where parts are not fit for use, or perished, faulty etc before it's even on the road doesn't bare thinking about.
So rather than say wheel a or wheel b is better, ask yourself does it fit your purpose and your budget, and are you happy with it.

Couldn't agree more.
On the wheel topic, just to illustrate, I am not "Anti" JB Wheels at all. I recently bought a set of their Speedwell replicas & was very pleased. They look how I want & will go round and round just fine.
I wouldn't choose to put them a a particularly highly performing car though. they were surprisingly heavy & I don't like the way that they use tapered nuts similar to standard ones. I never like seeing that on Alloy wheels.

Good to hear that about the Speedwell replicas,I am planning on buying a set for my MKI and had wondered about the quality. It will not be a fire breathing monster so they should be fit for purpose.Agree on the taper nuts on alloys as well, not a fan.mk1 wrote:Ask yourself does it fit your purpose and your budget, and are you happy with it.

A friend and I are having the same debate so I'm glad to find this thread. Does anyone know the weight of the JBW version?
Has anyone raced the JBW version for a season and lived to tell the tale?
