100+ 10" rim with and without steel washer

Post by Drkassler »

Hi!
I have eight 10" 100+ rims. Seven of them has a steel washer at each of the stud holes but the eight rim lacks the washers.

Without washers

Have anyone of you guys came across this?
Is the rim without the washer an early type?
Can I use it with the ordinary wheel nuts?

Is the diameter of the two stud holes the same?

If the alloy only hole is bigger than the steel one then the wheel has probably lost its steel inserts. If they are the same then the wheel never had inserts, but I would be very careful about what wheel nut I used, I doubt the ones in question would be standard.

It's clear that the rim has never has any steel inserts. The hole for the insert is greatly larger than the hole in the rim.
I will see if I can measure the angle and maybe make special nuts with the lathe...

Thanks for the reply.

If you work out what type of nut you need, these people will probably be able to help you.

I had a set of these wheels on my first Mini many years ago. The inserts on the outer face would crack easily when overtightened, which happened quite often, I was a young student full of spunk back then. My fix was to get hold of a washer about the same size and hammer it to about the same shape and tighten it up :)

Refinished 14 of these wheels going back more than 20 years ago...NEVER saw one without the steel seat/insert.

The first set of 5 I restored in 1992 are still on the Mini we built in Canada...but it is now in the USA. Owner says the wheels look good!

I would NOT use the alloy wheel without the steel insert. These wheels are quite old now and the insert is missing for a reason.

The rim without inserts has never had any inserts, it's of a completely different design. I have checked how the standard wheel nuts mates with the cone of the rim and it's perfect. The wheel is now fitted on the left rear of my mini convertible and it works excellent. It hasn't come loose during one whole week of parking in the garage.
I will monitor that specific wheel and if problems will arise, I will tell you all about it.
