BMC Works Support Vehicles

Post by 111Robin »

Does anyone know of a reference book/web site that would show photographs of BMC service support vehicles ?. Not transporters but service "barges" ?

Yes I saw that. I'm not particularly interested in the transporters though, more the support vehicles that would have provided service back-up during the rallies.

You'd need to search all the remotely "BMC Comps" books, including marque and driver bio books and virtually all period magazines.
Unless someone has already done so and is prepared to post it?
If not, can list most remotely relevant books to search and can attempt to make a list when time permits.

Thanks, there probably isn't a single reference as you say. Don't spend a lot of time compiling the list, a few pointers will do to get me started.

Thanks Iain, that's the sort of thing I'm looking for. Even just finding out which cars were used would be a good place to start.

One of the problems in posting a photo (copyright BMC or Bill Price?) collected from a foreign site is that the caption can be wrong.....

There is a lot of information in the text of some books. Until I got round to reading Marcus Chambers' book I had no idea a Morris Oxford Traveller had been used at one time!

DOX232C is a Birmingham number so Longbridge supplied. The Austin Mini 850 I used to have (618AOG) was prepared by Longbridge and not Abingdon apparently (?)

I had a 1970 Mini Van that was supplied new to BL Competitions but it would have just been a local run around vehicle. It is YBL345H and still exists.

In a copy of the Castrol Rally Manual ( Number 2) edited by Peter Browning I have there, is an article about service vehicles and a nice photo of a works Vanden Plas 4Ltr R outside the Comp's Department on page 70 if this also helps.

Thanks. I did think the VDP had been used, I'll add it to the list.

BMCA used an Austin Freeway Wagon with Minilites on it here in Aus for one of our Rallies.
