Metro turbo oil pump

Post by mini_surfari »

Hi there,

Back in February I purchased a GLP110MS turbo oil pump for my 1293 N/A engine I've been building, I only put the engine in the car the other day and its not yet been turned over.

I've read that there has been some problems getting oil pressure with this pump recently as the are around the peg is machine to narrow and allows pressure to decrease around the cam bearing?

Is anyone using this pump and have any thoughts?

before I pull it all back apart

Cheers, Oli

i put a turbo pump on my 1071, when i rebuilt it

when i tested the engine for oil pressure while it was out the car, it went over 100psi ( maxed the gauge out) and after a few cranks it blew the oil pump gasket and i lost oil pressure.

so i stripped it down and replaced it with a standard pump, and its been fine ever since, nice steady 50-55 psi when warm.

i always test to see if i have oil pressure before fitting it in the car, saves a lot of hassle.

when you turn it over for the first time keep an eye on the gauge,

to be honest if your not running a turbo, you don't need a turbo pump.

N/A Engine - Standard Pump.
Boosted Engine (that needed Oil for accessories) - Turbo Pump.

The Turbo Pump is intended to pump additional Oil volume, not increase the pressure, however, if it can't dump the added volume of Oil anywhere, it will show up as more pressure.

The Additional volume of Oil these Pumps can more will overwhelm the stock Oil Pressure Relief Valve set up.

all good info thanks guys,

i was under the impression that a high capacity oil pump was ideal in a high revving engine though?

Easy to think that but no, not the case.

If you can / could pump more oil without adding to the pressure, so increasing the volume of flow, that can aid in bottom end cooling, but these engine don't have a real lot of parts that need pressure fed oil, for example, they only have 3 main Bearings.

Also, given that by around 2000 engine RPM and above, the stock relief valve is starting to lift off it's seat, it's fairly clear that the stock set up has enough capacity, after all what's going doing the relief valve isn't doing anything for lubrication.

Just another point as well to consider, upping the pressure only squeezes the oil more and in doing so, heats it up more.
