Fresh built engine, straight cut drops, verto clutch. I'm worried about the noise coming from the clutch area, sounds like an alternator with knackered bearings, all noise goes away when I press the clutch down as can be heard at the end of the video
could be just the clutch release bearing? try slacking off the adjustment until you can get the bearing off the diaphragm and the noise should go away. Straight cut drop gears do chatter at idle but that doesn't sound like the gears but maybe its the video sound?
I don't have any suggestions other than to say when you step on the clutch everything in the transmission from the idler gear down stops turning. It definitely sounds nasty.
I hope it is the clutch release bearing. What is the significance of whether the oil pressure goes down with the clutch pressed in. Would that point to something else?

Or could be an engine mount bolt (same).
If the clutch release bearing is ok and no bolt are touching from the outside of the flywheel, You'd have to look at the drop bearings. This might sound stupid but I've heard of lads forgetting to fit them on one side.
I have levered away the clutch release bearing away from the clutch and no change to noise
I have checked that no bolts are touching anything they are not
The clutch is a twin spring verto, built it myself an age ago, dont believe there is a backplate on these, if anything on the clutch was touching anything made from ally it would soon wear it down and the noise would disapear?
I am a newbe with straight cut drops, some people are telling me they are supposed to make this kind of racket. Not sure.....no experience here
Mine are brand new and do make a noise as the revs fall back to idle. Only around 2500 or 3000 revs and is louder when the oil is thin. Has done it from the first start. My theory is it's at a certain revs where there is a certain harmonic frequency.
Rev it a bit harder! At least, don't mess about too long, it'll need to get on the road for you to bed the rings in.
I had this happen to me on a fresh built gearbox too, only a few weeks ago, for me there where two issues.
1. Have you changed the primary gear? I had to change to a new one, as the 24 teet one made noise, I could feel the teet "grinding" when i turned the gearbox, from the primary. This was brand new. Changed it to a old one, "grinding" gone, Also changed it to a new 23 teet, "grinding" gone. The 23 is the one thats in the box now.
2. The clutch release bearing was bad, so since I had been running the car without the return spring, i assume it was running with the clutch, but when i pressed the clutch the slack in the bearing was "taken out" and noise gone.
This was in my race mini, so all straight cut.
I made all the changes with engine in the car, took off the clutch/flywheel and changed primary, and release bearing. Now it sound like a straight cut gearbox should.
The sound, sound alot like mine did.

My gears are all new minispares straight cut drops. In my case i think if I am not mistaken the noise cant be the clutch release bearing because i can leaver the clutch arm and bearing away from the clutch and the noise stays.
Ive had lots of advise, some people say their drops were noisy like this and when they stripped their engine down everything was perfect. Im really not sure yet
