'64 970/1275 Cooper S

Post by Nevsmini »

Some of you guys that get cooper world might remember this car from Early 2013. We bought it from the east side of the states late 2012 as a December '64 1275 S. Only to find when we got it home and spoke to Simon Wheatcroft that it was one of the 7 Cooper S 970's that were sold with different engines presumably to raise the numbers for homologation! 5 had 1275 S engines, 1 had a 1071 S engine and one was even fitted with a 998 cooper engine.
The car having spent it's life on the east side of the States suffered from the same rust as we do on this side of the pond. So lots of panels and welding needed :( but still well worth saving.

The car must have been used for some type of competition as the Hydro pipes were running inside the car.

That was a great find! Bet you're glad it wasn't the 998  , though would have been pretty unique! Certainly some great cars over in the States.

No Rich it's not Neil's Car, it's a 66 1275 S that I sold around 2011/12 to a mini friend in Paris. Lovely original car. All it had was front wings and front panel.

After the car sitting at home for a year with no progress and Dad asking me every other week when are YOU going to restore the red one, soon turned into when are WE starting the Red one. Until one day it was I'm going to start restoring the Red one  . So without me knowing it the car became dads and so the work started. With 80% of his classic cars being Red I should have known ;) . Here he is taking the engine out the old fashioned way, just imagine the engine crane is 4 supporters at the race track ;) and to think there is a lift in the garage with heat but No let's take the engine out in the cold and wet weather. 'It will be quicker'

I would remove all interior trim before dispatching to a restorer as it would be all to easy for some to get misplaced by them! Looking forward to watching this progress. Gray
