Number Plates

Anyone know where I can get some 1971 number plates? Black background with raised silver letters. also, should they be the same on the back??

Hi Dean, 1971 plates would have been the same as the ones on the car when you got it (the front one looked like the original!) ie: black letters on white (front) and black letters on yellow (rear) :

Most people with late 60's/early 70's classic cars seem to use pressed ali ones (as you described) for aesthaetic reasons (make it look old!) but the reflective ones were actually introduced in 1967 as far as I know and are "correct" for your car..

Hi I bought mine for my project on ebay around 4 years ago but have yet to get to the stage with my project to fit them they are classed as show plates you get to choose the standard number plate size or square plates depending on what its for think they were £17 (just looked on ebaytype in metal pressed show plates) they will pop up and go from there £19.50 for two plates delivered hope this helps

Vehicles registered before jan 1973 can have black and silver plates,which means if your
L reg car was reg between aug/dec 72 you don't need the horrible reflective ones

Even though the old style black and silver plates were still legal in 1971 and '72, most new cars were supplied with the new style reflective plates. My father purchased a new Hillman Avenger, which was delivered on August the 1st 1972 and that had reflective plates.

For som reason I thought my plates were black and silver but I was mistaken they are White and Black on the front and yellow and black on the back

Most cars in '68 would have had 'em, let alone the 70's. Down to personal preference Dean, get some ST arches, Mambas, spots on the front and stick the plate on the bonnet.

...After my Dad retired in 68 his first priv car that year had reflective plates.. most cars did from then on... I put sticky plates on the bonnet of my first cooper and then promptly took them off because It was deemed illegal at the time !!.. the rational being police could not easily read plates unless they were at bumper level as on virtually all cars ....so either black/silver old style whether flat or raised even ribbed..or the more modern reflective yellow/white tis your choice .. old style plates jus seem to look nicer tho.. foxy52

i'm going for the pressed aluminium, natural ali raised letters / numbers on black for my car. its a 69 car and so presumably could have had either but more likely new style. Its never gonna be concours and so going for what looks period (even if not strictly true), i prefer, and is legal!

you do see a lot of H reg's with this style so it looks right. J and K reg however you might expect to be new style though as you see a lot with them......

If you have a classic mini with black plates and no hazard lights but use it regularly I think the use of modern reflective number plates is a safety consideration as we all know the cars don't break down at night! There are holders available so that you can use black plates at shows.

No chance of that with Dean, it'll only be doing about a thousand miles a year, and 999 and a half of those will be on a trailer!

It was retro to fit reflective plates to 60s and early 70s cars back in them days, If you seen a new car in 1970 /71 with black and white plates you thought something was wrong with it, Times have changed ,Deans car could have come out of the show room with reflective on !!!! , I registered a Mini Jem in 1969 on a G plate and it had to have the then fashionable reflective plates fitted !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Its now back to black and white days, though a 69/70/71/72 would not go a miss with reflective plates, But i am old school when the 60/70s was all about souping up your car.
