mk1 morris grille re chrome / options
HI all I have an original mk1 morris grille in need of re chrome the cheapest quote I have been given for this is £150 +vat which is too much for me so do I prep and spray this one the same colour as the body which is almond green or old english white to match the wheels and fit the grille surround and whiskers ? Options or ideas welcome thanks it looks pretty clean head on but from a birds eye vie the slats are rusting a little

That's character, get some autosol on it over a few weekends then a coat of wax and it's good to go. Have a squiz at my thread in our projects I'm really keen to keep some age on the car but rock solid and well restored.
I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

Re: mk1 morris grille re chrome / options
If you've ever tried to polish one of those you'll know why chroming it is so expensive.. Before the chrome (etc) can be applied the surface has to to polished and there are 80 odd off those wretched little slats. Maybe if you attacked the corrosion with a small wire wheel in a Dremel and present them with a clean smooth surface to chrome the price might come down... but I wouldn't bank on it as they still have to polish the various layers before the final chrome can be applied.
Early cars did have that grille in white before they moved to chrome.... but it will still be a pile of work.
My car has the same grille so i feel your pain
Cheers, Ian

I agree with dr. S and would try a can of chrome polish and an old t shirt! Follow it up with some wax polish and give a good buff!
There was a vid going round on face book demonstrating the powers of coca cola in polishing a rusty chrome bumper so you could give that a try too although I was sceptical....

Glad to hear that you have decided to polish it yourself. In my experience that is a very clean grille & all it needs is a polish. Re chroming them is ALWAYS expensive.

I haven't tried it myself yet , but there is a ( chrome) paint now . It's quite a long process from what I've heard about it .i think it's one of those four stage processes . Having seen it on a car I would say it kinda looks like polished stainless .... Just a thought ! .... Ken

I know it's the oil money speaking, but having a rechromed one for £150...I'd do it in a flash!

Very difficult to get the chrome to "throw" into the slats.
It needs a specially shaped anode to do the best job.

Re: mk1 morris grille re chrome / options
I wonder of it might be a candidate for the chrome painting technique?
