I (and you may laugh) found a 286 fine. It's an old mini, you may as well put something exciting in it.

It wasn't overly cammy.

On road cars I've always found the 544 (old number, not sure what that would cross to these days) a nice cam

JBZ - for a well mannered 'mild' road cam I would recommend the Kent Cam MD266 or the MG Metro profile, they are very similar. If you then later find this cam does not give you enough excitement then they can both be usefully upgraded by either fitting offset bushes (keeping original forged S rockers) or 1.5 ratio high lift rockers. I'm running a 1293 with the MD266 and offset bush rockers. Decent performance and reasonable fuel economy.

For info the 544 cam (same profile 643 in 'spider' drive) is quite similar in timing and lift to the MD286 cam, but by all accounts the MD286 gives better power. Probably not what you would call a mild cam, better suited to either very fast road or rally use.

I'm going to have finding out what the new cam is like in my new build, a SW23T should be interesting on the road  (it does get used for Hillclimbs and sprints :) )
