AEG 649 cam
Just wondering on you opinion on the 649 cam. I MAY have the opportunity to buy an MG 1300 block bored to 1430 and fitted with a 649 cam. This is a "full race" cam is it not?? Just looking some food for thought.

Re: AEG 649 cam
ahh...
the 649
my current 1430 runs one, it will bounce on its suspension rubbers as it ticks over like an excited dog.
it does bog a little if you try and leave it in third below 2500 rpm, but its not to bad.
it really goes well if you pull its ears back.
mine is unusual (period build!) in that it runs normal rockers and a huge heavy 1300gt flywheel, so its got bags of torque.
its an unusual engine for me, as I much prefer my 1071's, but it was in the car when I bought it, and I just rebuilt it.

Re: AEG 649 cam
I always run a 649 in my fast road cars, as Rich said the idle is a bit "Lumpy" but it adds to the boy racer feel!!

Re: AEG 649 cam
lumpy but not undrivable on the road, in had one and used it successfully in a 1380 which helped a lot think the increased displacement 'tames' them a little bit

Re: AEG 649 cam
That is spot on, the bigger the engine displacement, the more tractable it is with the 649, we had one in a 1400 S & it was easily driveable in any road conditions. In a 1430
it should be no problem at all. I don't know what carburettors you intend to run, but we found twin 1.75" SU's gave the best results. (Unless of course you have some split webers!)

Re: AEG 649 cam
I had a 649 in my first 1275S using twin 1-3/4SUs as a teenager. It was a handful and I was pretty much over the lumpy idle and carburettor 'overlap' in a short time using the car as a commute to work. It works very well though with big capacities, LCB exhausts and higher CR. Not really a road cam though in my opinion.

Re: AEG 649 cam
Thanks for the comments guys. Great food for thought.
Fingers crossed the engine does come up for sale at the right money. I'd intend running a single 45 weber on sc box. Def not as a commuter car

Re: AEG 649 cam
It depends on how happy you are driving a car that is a "bit of a handful". If correctly timed in on a 970, the 649 will come in with a fairly large thump at about 3,800 & will give good power through to 7,000 - 7,500. This is not really ideal for the road or for the 970 as it should be making good power higher up the rev range than that.
I personally would not choose this cam for a road going or race 970 as there are grinds that will work better on the road & on the track depending on what you want.

Re: AEG 649 cam
thank you for quick reply.
Bill Richards suggested me not use it for my application too. He said that i will get power just on high revs- from 7.000 rpm.
the only problem is that i am just too curious because i have never driven this cam and i think that is the only cam in my country.

Re: AEG 649 cam
If you use it, I am sure you will be disappointed with the result.
Much as I am in no position to argue with Bill Richards, I have used this cam in a 970 bored to 73.5 and the car was a true RS2000 beater in it's day. hard to drive fast though.

Re: AEG 649 cam
Which was it again?
One has a longer inlet than exhaust (320/300) and the other is (320/320).
My 1430 has a 320/320 in it, which is a really weird cam. Standard cooper s rockers, 48 weber on a 7" manifold with 60mm trumpets. Massive valves and MONSTER ports. SCCR on a 3.6FD.
Haven't run it yet. Had a previous mini with silly engine which used to hop it's arse on tickover. Sounded insane as well.
Let's face it, minis are a bit naff really compared to today's traffic, so you may as well build one with a really user unfriendly engine and enjoy utter frenzied 9mpg when you can afford to.
Let's all remember that race cams use LOTS AND LOTS OF FUEL.
I think my last one did about 12mpg.

Re: AEG 649 cam
I used a SuperSprint years ago in a hillclimber, it worked REALLY well. No power below 4,000, but F me once it took off, it took of like a scalded cat. Gave good power too up to 9,000.
Not really a road cam though.
