Thanks to everyone who came down to Harewood on Sunday, either to show their car on our award winning stand or just to say hello. I think it is fair to say that we had an eventful day :)

It was great to win the prize for the best club stand, although I have no idea what you do with bubble gum flavoured odourizer or 24 assorted cans of "monster", squirting the former into Rich's beard struck me as a pretty decent idea at the time :) & we did manage to find a lucky youth to relieve us of our "Monster" who I don't imagine will be sleeping for a month. We managed to get a great selection of cars despite not managing to dispose of all 10 tickets & our little display showing the huge variation of Minis, derivatives & variants clearly went down well with the organisers.

Our fortunes on track were a little more mixed.

I was so pleased to see that Rich managed to get his Surf Blue racer finished & fitted with a sensible gear lever, and both Adam & I turned up me having washed the car twice after the filthy sprint at Blyton last weekend.

All started off well, Rich put in a decent time in the little 1071 & both Adam & I managed to break our own hill records on our first runs. The second run however didn't go quite so well. Rich went MUCH faster & I was looking for a good tussle with him, but 1/2 way up on my second practice & noticed a very nasty clunk, clunk, clunk coming from the front end. Initially I thought it could be a CV joint or drive coupling, upon investigation it looks likely to be the "unbreakable" Quaife ATB diff. Our day was over, to add insult to injury, as I lowered the jack I managed to trap both Adams hands between the car & a front wheel, rendering his day doubly over. I was ready to pack up & go home.

It was Rich who suggested I see if i could do the afternoons competitive runs in the Sprint. I can't thank the organisers at Harewood enough, they bent over backwards getting the Sprint Scrutineered & entered ready for the afternoons runs. OK, it wasn't "really" competitive, but it meant that my day wasn't totally ruined & Adam could sit on the sidelines watching me have fun while he nursed his aching wrists.

By the end of the day Rich had managed a very creditable second in class behind a very fast septuagenarian in a beautifully prepared TR6 & I managed 4 uneventful runs in the Sprint improving my time by a good few seconds. My fastest time in the Wolseley is 73.29 so I reckoned that if I managed under 80 seconds I was doing OK, when I pulled a 78.79 out of the bag on the last run I was thrilled.

So, as I said above, a pretty eventful day all round, I couldn't get close to Rich in his racer & he couldn't get close to an old man in a Triumph, it was great to see AndyB, Timell, Goff, Stu & everyone who came down to say hello, we suffered broken vehicles, broken bodies & a beard that smelt like Bubblegum, but we still walked away with a Trophy!

One of the most enjoyable events all year for me.

Is that a Manx 7-Port in one of the shots?
Got any more pictures of it that you could post?

its the red Maguire, it had a set of split 45's on a normal five port

it did have plenty of manx parts on it, but not a manx 7 port

owner was a really nice guy and the car was beautiful

Mark, this raises 2 obvious questions:

1. Why didn't you run the moke in the afternooon - that sort of weight saving usually costs thousands! Scrutineers not too keen, I guess?

and

2. Given that you knobbled Adam, do we assume his times were getting a little too close to Dad's?

Looks like a cracking day all round (disasters aside) but the Hornet seems to love a problem......

Yet another cracking event that I've missed, but thanks to Stu for sharing those superb photographs.
I'll get along to an event one day, I promise.

Thanks Rich/David,
My excuse was I only had a quick look at the pictures, saw the rose jointed carb linkage and the Manx badge on the rocker cover and put 2 and 2 together to make 5!
Anyone get any pictures of the rocker cover or in particular the badge?
Cheers

No probs Gary, before the 7 port Bill Quoine at Manx did some great 5 port tuning, the 7 porter heads are strange things a bit more work than 5 ports with the centre port split.
In the south we used to run against one in the old BARC Touring car class and it never performed better than a well set up 5 port on the speed scene, it may have been a different story on a circuit however!

Forgot to say Derek has owned and run this car since the late seventies or early eighties the same time as mine has been competing, BDL is the 5 port and JHW ran the 7 port

CORRECT :)

2. Given that you knobbled Adam, do we assume his times were getting a little too close to Dad's?

ALSO CORRECT :)
