id drain the oil out and see what prizes you have won!
First thing I did. The usual magnetic fuzzy stuff with a mixture of metallic finger nail clippings

The culprit.
Split the crown wheel. So much for straight cut gears. Thankfully the car wasn’t flat out when it happened otherwise it would have been goodnight Vienna for the engine and box.

Jeez - that’s both unlucky and lucky in equal measures!

Can’t be a common failure point?

Never seen it before if I’m honest, be interested if anybody else has. I’m always careful to lap the crown wheel on as sometimes they can be a bit tight, and torque the bolts up correctly. It has split right on a bolt hole.
Crap steel I think, it’s not come from one of the usually suppliers. Should have known better.

Yup, Lucky & Unlucky in equal doses there!

No serious harm done :)

Did the crown wheel feel "odd" when you were bolting it up.

Only recently Rich & I found an old Jack Knight Crown wheel that appeared to have had the holes drilled at an incorrect pitch, they were all about 20 thou closer to the middle than they were supposed to be. Your experience vindicates us in not using it.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Thinking about it now Mark, I do seem to recall something being not quite right, but as it bolted down flush to to the flange I thought all was good. It may have been the bolts were slightly tighter than they should have been going in or something  which would suggest a similar problem to the one described by yourself.

It wasn't something that we had encountered before, but it was sufficiently unusual for us to not use the crown wheel & pinion. Glad we didn't now :)

Also glad it didn't do too much damage to your car.
