finish on the brake servo 1969 mk2 cooper s?
Does anyone have a view (silly question) on the finish for the brake servo?
I have spoken to a lockheed and girling specialist who believes that the finish to the body of the brake servo should be natural cast iron. many other research sources have shown satin black or dark grey, or silver zinc coated.
and what about the diaphragm case? the same specialist suggested it should be matt silver zinc which is not available due to health risks in the process, so that leaves me with a choice of silver zinc or gold zinc. I've seen both......
many thanks

I have had in the past , powder coated the main body , satin black and the housing plated silver .
May not be 100% correct but ........
I would like to know otherwise.

I have a 69 mk2 S with original servo that I know is untouched from new. It has natural, as cast body and gold zinc plated housing.

thank you, those are really helpful replies........
.......and it looks as though the body should be unfinished cast iron which i like.
a wiping with some engine oil to slow the oxidising process me thinks!
thanks again

Don't frost sell some 'cast iron finish' paint?
It might be worth using that as the iron body on my servo started going rusty the instant it was fitted!

A smear of Vaseline once a month will do for me! I'd welcome the chance to fettle....

I had my plater over today dropping off some bits for my SPI and we got talking about the finish on some servos I had on the bench . Up coming rebuild .
We opened a couple up and one has a gold finish inside while the other is silver. I've had these for over 30 years so I doubt if someone has plated them before .
Maybe there was BOTH silver and gold ???????

i have no doubt that there were both silver and gold..... my research led me to believe that a late mk2 was more likely to have a gold one, hence my decision. that is not to say there won't be some conflicting evidence somewhere too. the interesting bit for me is the natural unfinished cast iron body. which i really like........ i hasten to add!Craig wrote: Maybe there was BOTH silver and gold ???????

Re: finish on the brake servo 1969 mk2 cooper s?
Based on this thread, I went ahead and sent my mk1 servo to J&L Spares for a rebuild. I had several email exchanges with them prior to my shipping the unit all the way from Chicago and they also confirmed that they received it ok. That was around a month ago or so. For the past 2 weeks I have been trying to get a hold of them via email and I don't get any responses. Can anyone confirm if I have had the world's worst luck and they went out of business? All I want to know is if they could estimate when they might be able to ship it back to me. Unfortunately I can't call them from my office during the day so I am stuck with email.
Could anyone confirm if they are still alive there?
Many thanks...

i just called them on +44 (0) 1706 644210 and they answered the phone, were bright cheery and helpful as usual. i asked if they were still refurbishing servos, how much and the turn around time - yes, £175 + VAT and 2-3 weeks.....Gary Schulz wrote: Could anyone confirm if they are still alive there?

evonaut,
Many thanks. So they just have a temporary aversion to emails I guess. I'll have to figure out how to call them at some point then....

Gary call them before you go to work in the morning, you are 5/6 hours behind the UK, so it would be dinner time in the UK, EASY , if you want I will call them on your behalf , then post outcome to you.

Goff,
If you ever have a chance to ping them I would be grateful. It is not a panic (at least now since I know they are still in business!).
If not I can arrange to do it sometime. I am just relieved that I don't have to try to find a replacement!
You guys are great...
Thanks again

I have just phoned J & L Spares on your behalf ( 9am UK time ) and they told me that your Servo will probably be ready next week and they will contact you by phone or email as regarding shipping it to you, I think they are old fashioned and don't always reply to emails , But if you are 5000 miles away that don't help.
OK this should put your mind at rest. Happy to help.
