Steering racks

Post by Steve A »

Hi, i have a mk1 shell (1966) which is currently being restored which i will be fitting 'dry' subframes to and adjustable suspension ride and geometry. I have ordered some brand new cooper s hub assemblies from minispares and was going to fit a brand new steering rack. Would it be o.k. to just fit a later steering rack? (the original steering column will be refitted) or does it have to be a mk1 rack.
I am a bit of a novice and this may seem quite straightforward to most of you so i am hoping someone can give me the answer? I kind of gather from Mikes question that i may need to make sure i have the later cooper s steering arms (i would imagine this is the only type made now).
I still have the mk1 steering rack from the car but being as most parts o the car are being replaced i thought it was safer to do so and with replacing the hub assemblies it may be necessary after reading Mikes post.
Any help greatly appreciated.

steve

fit a mk2 rack - they are far easier to get

then just use the mk2 steering arms, again, far more common. the mk2 ones have little 'ears' so you can tell them apart.

please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

Cheers Rich, i take it that these will be the ones that will come from minispares with the hub assemblies but i will phone and check.
Another question; I will be running on 10" rims standard height adj. gaz shockers and adjustable camber probably around 1/2 degree neg camber for standard road use? Will i need to fit the longer track rod ends or will the standard ones be o.k. (as i already bought them). Thanks Steve

the steering arms are an extra purchase as minispares assume that you have the pair from the car

id use the longer ones as it can get a bit marginal if your just using std track rods

Thanks again, i have just checked on their website and you are quite correct the arms are not included, when i ordered though i did ask them for a complete assembly? i have given them a big order so will have to chase them up on this one.
Thanks Steve
