Re: Old Disc brakes....
I remember now that my dad always told me how fastiduous but rewarding was the balancing of his wheels, which was made ON the car, ie with discs/drums. He had this made at the national homologation laboratory (workshop) of which my grand-dad was the director in the sixties, and this involved quite a big machine that not every workshop could afford.

My old static balancer. The Dunlop rally/racing tyre van used similar thing in the 60s and think you can buy one for motorcycles.Sometimes you find disks and drums that are real bad.

That is pretty grim!
I had never thought of checking disks & drums for balance. Maybe time to make a static balancer like that one. I assume the wheels are on little roller bearings.

Think the Dunlop one can be seen used in one of the British Pathe RAC rally films ca -63is? Was it the one where they showed preparation of a Mini?

Is that a drum brake front drive flange you're using on the balancer? It looks like it only has three studs? and or different sized studs?Tulka wrote:

Wouldn't that affect the balancing?
I assume you keep spinning it and seeing where it stops..... until it becomes random therefore balanced?

Mini's don't rust................Downunder!

I do use four studs, photo lies.Do not recall why they are different, must have been some odd wheels.graham in aus wrote: Is that a drum brake front drive flange you're using on the balancer? It looks like it only has three studs? and or different sized studs?

When balancing I spin or try 1/4 turns, whatever mood I am in. The more patient, the better results. If in a hurry, dont.Centering is critical and can be done in better ways than I do it.Also the drum shown is not typical, just the worst I have ever found. Monday drum? I also think I could have done the removal of material much nicer, like ventilation holes to remove brake dust.
I just used some small bearings with metal seals for less friction. Also less drag with no grease?mk1 wrote: I assume the wheels are on little roller bearings.
I googled a bit and found that Paddy Hopkirk had sold something, so I checked my 1980 catalog. No result. Also anyone that recall those where you balance the wheel horisontal on a stand, and watch a spirit leveller?
My third photo is something you can buy for bikes over here. Its about 28£

While I made my balancer 25-30 years ago after seeing one, I forgot
all about Ebay.
