Going by the timing cover backplate it's been fitted in a Mini.

Difficult to say what it originally came from without the engine number. As you say it's a pre-A+ 1275 block but these were also fitted in 1100/1300 and Allegros.

It looks to be a 1978 to 1980 1275 GT Engine, however, it's clearly been rebuilt / reassembled at some point so could also be a bitsa.

I've found - in general - that the 1275 blocks in the year range from 77 to early 79 to be the best of all the 1275, not exclusively, but in general.

In brief, I've found that the grade of cast iron they used up to the A+ engines is better and - maybe a coincidence with the blocks that I've seen - the machining done from the factory was better in every way to those before this year range and WAY better than anything that I've seen after.

Interesting. How did you identify this as a 78-80 block btw?

You mean the OP's?

Ah, well, I could say 'Secret Women's Business',,,,

It has the boss cast in to the block for the bolt on the late type timing cover / front engine plate.

68 (or when ever it was that they were introduced) to 77;-

78 to late 79 (which were still being fitted early 80 along side the A+)

There's a few other things as well that points me to that year range.
