A related technical question - how does one remove the chrome strips (window frame surrounds) without bending/damaging the strips and how does one put them back after painting the doors without damaging the paint?

I'm talking about the early Aussie doors like the ones on the Mk1 S' on the first page of this thread.

I use a block of soft timber and a mallet to remove them, it's one job that you really want take time with as it's easy to have them looking like a banana. I know some guys who use a brick bolster to equally good effect.

Fitting them back on, I use a soft rubber mallet. Be aware though that there are rubber mattels and soft rubber mallets. Or you can cover the strip with masking tape and use a wide soft piece of timber.

Like Spider said, I use a block of pine and a hammer to knock them off and a rubber or nylon mallet to refit them, usually masked with duct take to protect the SS.

Its worth noting that they are stainless rather than chrome, so any minor damage can be dressed and scratches polished out.
